Why this work matters
Every child deserves to grow up safe, heard and valued.
Children and adolescents face greater risks when violence is normalised, protection concerns remain unspoken and unequal gender expectations restrict their choices.
YWAFT engages children, families, educators and community leaders in practical conversations about safety, dignity, equality and shared responsibility. Community awareness helps people recognise harmful practices and create environments in which children can participate and seek support.
We connect child protection with gender equality, education, economic opportunity and community leadership because lasting safety depends on the attitudes, relationships and systems surrounding every child.
The challenge
Protection requires informed families and accountable communities.
Violence, exploitation, child marriage, discrimination and unequal power can affect a child’s wellbeing, education and future. Prevention begins when communities understand the risks and act together.
Harmful social norms
Beliefs that tolerate violence or unequal treatment can restrict the rights and choices of girls and women.
Silence and fear
Children may hesitate to speak when they fear blame, disbelief, retaliation or exclusion.
Economic vulnerability
Poverty and limited opportunity can increase exposure to exploitation, child marriage and school interruption.
