Why this work matters

Dignity should never be a barrier to education.

Menstruation can interrupt a girl’s education when accurate information, safe facilities, affordable materials and supportive adults are missing.

YWAFT works with girls, schools, families and local leaders to replace silence and stigma with practical knowledge and community support. Our activities help girls understand their bodies, manage menstruation safely and participate in school with confidence.

We connect menstrual health education with child protection, gender equality and wider community action because girls thrive when their whole environment supports them.

The challenge

Girls face connected barriers—not isolated problems.

Stigma, misinformation, inadequate sanitation, limited access to menstrual materials and unsupportive school environments can combine to undermine confidence and attendance.

01

Knowledge gaps

Girls may reach menstruation without clear, age-appropriate information or trusted sources of guidance.

02

Stigma and exclusion

Shame, teasing and harmful beliefs can isolate girls at school and within their communities.

03

Materials and facilities

Limited menstrual products, privacy, water and safe changing spaces make daily management difficult.

04

Protection risks

Economic pressure and unequal gender norms can increase vulnerability and restrict girls’ choices.

Our approach

Practical support rooted in community participation.

We combine learning, materials, school engagement and community dialogue so that change continues beyond a single activity.

03
